July 9 2007: Two distinct parts of AXA UK locked horns in a clash that pitted the best football players from each business. The climax was a penalty shoot out.
AXA and Winterthur, now part of the AXA Group, were amongst 10 other pension investment providers taking part in the five-a-side tournament at Wimbledon Goals Centre London, organised by fund management group Fidelity.
Teams were split into two leagues of six, with the top four from each progressing to the quarter finals. The winning teams from each then competed in the semi-final, with AXA and Winterthur being the two teams in the final to decide the overall champion, with the Winterthur team eventually coming out on top.
The final was a closely contested match, with a 1-1 draw. After two scores from each team on penalties, Pete Chamberlain (Divisional Sales manager, Winterthur South) made a miraculous save, going on to coolly slot the ball away to score the winning goal, defeating AXA 3-2.
The Winterthur boys fought stronger and harder than last year, the first to be run by Fidelity, transforming from a team that failed to qualify to champions of the event.
The winning seven players for Winterthur were Wayne Barlow, Mark Johnson, Peter Mahon, Tony Kehlar, Roger Grosvenor, Richard Wilson and their captain Peter Chamberlain.
Wayne Barlow, Individual Business Manager at Winterthur, said “The whole day was really enjoyable; there was a good team spirit and it always helps to win at the end of the day”.
“It was truly eye-catching football,” says Pete Chamberlain. “We all played above our normal standards and no doubt AXA will come back fitter and harder to beat us next year, but we are up to the task to maintain the trophy”.
